Refrigerator Getting Old? 3 Common Problems It May Start Having

Construction & Contractors Blog

If your refrigerator is getting old, it will likely start having problems. Fortunately, some problems are not expensive to repair. This can save you a lot of money, as getting these problems repaired will prevent you from having to replace the refrigerator. To help you know what is wrong, below is information on three common problems you may have with your refrigerator.

Not Cooling

If you open your refrigerator and notice it is not cooling or the temperature is much higher than it normally is, the condenser coils may be dirty. You can find these coils under your refrigerator. These coils are important because they remove heat from inside the refrigerator. Over time, debris can build up on the coils, and once this happens, the coils cannot remove as much heat.

Shine a flashlight under your refrigerator and look at the condenser coils. If they are dirty, you can try to use a vacuum cleaner attachment to get under the refrigerator to remove the debris. If this does not work, you will have to clean them. Refer to the owner's manual of your refrigerator before you start cleaning them to ensure you use the right type of cleaning solution.

Ice Maker Not Working

If the ice maker in your refrigerator is not making any ice, this may be due to the temperature of the freezer. For example, the temperature may have been accidentally changed too high. Also, dirty condenser coils and problems with the condenser fan can cause the temperature to rise. Refer to the owner's manual for your refrigerator to see what the right type of temperature it should be set to.

If the temperature is correct, there is likely a component of the icemaker that is not working. You may be able to replace the component, or you may have to replace the entire ice maker.

Light Inside Refrigerator Not Working

If you open your refrigerator and it is dark, this could be something as simple as a bad light bulb. Remove the bulb and take it with you to a home improvement store and buy a new one. If the new bulb does not fix the problem, the light assembly may be bad. You can purchase a new light assembly from the manufacturer of your refrigerator.

If the bulb or light assembly is not bad, then it could be problems with the light switch. If you want to check this yourself, a multimeter can be used to test for continuity. If the switch does not have a constant electrical current, then the switch needs to be replaced.

If you find problems, you need to contact an appliance repair company like J & M Appliance to come to your home. They can determine what is wrong and repair the refrigerator for you.

inspecting the roof on your home

When was the last time you really looked at your roof? I had no idea how important yearly inspections of my roof was until I found myself footing the bill for a full roof replacement and interior ceiling replacement. Since then, I have learned how to inspect my own roof twice each year. I always inspect it each spring after the harsh winter elements have gone away and again in the fall before winter weather sets in. You can use the information compiled on my website to inspect the roof on your home and make the small repairs that will save you from full roof replacement.
